Reflections on Using AI for Visual Storytelling

Updated: Sep 8

In today’s digital world, images have become more than decoration; they’re storytelling tools. Lately, I’ve been exploring AI-generated images as a way to capture emotions and moments that are difficult to photograph in real life. One image in particular has stuck with me:

"Design a photo in which people on social media are making fun of people asking for help, a woman sitting behind the screen shaking her head and understanding the comments have nothing to do with her but everything to do with how they're feeling about themselves."

I remember typing this prompt into my AI tool, unsure of what the final picture would look like. But when it appeared on my screen, I felt a mix of surprise and recognition. The woman’s expression, subtle yet profound, captured a truth I’ve lived with online: that negativity directed at us is often a reflection of the other person’s inner struggles, not our own.

Using AI to bring this concept to life gave me a new perspective on both digital art and empathy. I realized that creating an image isn’t just about producing something visually appealing; it’s about telling a story, expressing an emotion, and holding space for understanding. AI doesn’t replace human creativity; it amplifies it, allowing me to translate abstract feelings into something tangible.

There’s a quiet power in seeing your inner reflections mirrored back through a tool like AI. It allows me to confront the subtle injustices of online spaces while also exploring my own reactions to them. It reminds me to step back, breathe, and remember that the judgment of strangers has nothing to do with my worth; it’s a projection of their own struggles.

Ultimately, these AI-generated images become more than posts or illustrations; they’re visual meditations. They help me process complex emotions, communicate experiences that are hard to put into words, and share a reminder with others: what people say online often says more about them than it does about you.

Using AI for visual storytelling has shown me how technology can amplify human creativity, helping to turn complex emotions into images that communicate understanding, empathy, and reflection.
