Reflection:

There’s a kind of magic that happens when you open a book. The world quiets, time softens, and suddenly you're somewhere else—on a windswept moor, in the depths of space, beneath the surface of the ocean, or inside someone else’s skin entirely. For as long as I can remember, stories have been my escape hatch. When real life felt too heavy, too loud, too much, I disappeared into fictional worlds where the pain wasn’t mine and the ending could always be rewritten. For most my life, that was true simply with characters on a screen. The past 5 years however, have been about books. It's a whole new world for me.

As a child, I found solace in TV characters. They were my safe places when the real world didn’t feel safe. I could be brave like the heroes I watched on the screen. I could cry for someone else’s heartbreak instead of mine. I could find pieces of myself on screens where no one was judging, interrupting, or hurting me. I still re-watch a few shows. It brings me a sort of calm and peace. Likely a reminder that more healing needs to take place. I practice this more now in my books. The imagination created from reading is far beyond what any screen could show me. It's a wonderful distraction.

But eventually, escaping wasn't enough.

There came a point when the feelings I was running from—grief, anger, confusion, fear—demanded to be seen. I couldn’t keep hiding in other people’s stories. I had to start telling my own.

That’s when I began writing heavily.

At first, it was just journaling. A messy purge of thoughts, feelings, and memories I didn’t know what to do with. But slowly, my writing took shape. Characters appeared—some of them versions of me, others the people I wished I had around me. Fiction became a way to tell the truth without having to speak it out loud. I could give my pain to someone else and see how they survived it. I could imagine a different ending, one where healing was possible. (Narrative Therapy)

Writing became the place where I wasn’t just escaping anymore—I was transforming. I was making sense of the chaos, giving voice to things I’d kept silent for too long. With every sentence, I stitched a little more of myself back together.

I won’t pretend it was easy, it still isn't. Writing about trauma is like reopening wounds you thought had scarred over. But for me, it was also the only way through. It taught me that healing isn’t a straight line. Sometimes it’s scribbled in the margins, buried in metaphors, or tucked between chapters.

Now, I still get lost in books and sometimes TV—but not to disappear. I go there to connect. And I still write—not to escape my feelings, but to face them with more courage than I thought I had, and to share my story so other people feel less alone.

If you’ve ever turned to a story because the world felt like too much, I see you. If you’ve ever put words to your pain and found a little relief in doing so, I understand. Stories can save us. Writing can heal us. And sometimes, getting lost is the first step toward finding our way home.

This is how I navigate my healing through storytelling.
